LEDs lead in kitchen lighting trends with task lighting and under cabinet lighting rounding out the top three kitchen lighting trends for 2015-2016 according to NKBA.

The light emitting diode (LED) is one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly developing technologies according to the American Lighting Association (ALA). They differ from incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting with features that offer lighting that is more efficient, durable, versatile and longer lasting.

Known for their small size, LEDs are “directional” light sources, emitting  light in a specific direction. They are able to use light and energy more efficiently in many home applications. More than five times more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs, it can last up to 25 times longer and are more expensive initially but will save money over the life use.

For comparison sake, the rated life for a typical standard incandescent bulb is 1,000 hours, the rated life of CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) is typically 6,000 hours, LEDs are rated for 25,000 hours or more!

In addition, LED bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR have been subjected to very specific requirements designed to replicate the experience we are used to with the standard A-type bulb which allows a wider application of use in the home.

As for kitchen lighting trends, LEDs rule in preference and are specified by more than 80% of designers surveyed in the NKBA 2015 Kitchen & Bath Style Report.

Popular placement of LEDs in the kitchen can be found in the following application:

  • Ceiling placement for directional down lighting
  • Rail system for general task lighting
  • Under cabinet lighting for mood and task
  • Interior cabinet lighting for showcasing features, collectibles

Expect LEDs to continue to be incorporated into bulbs and fixtures for general lighting applications in the future, and not just for the kitchen.
