The National Association of the Remodeling Industry has confirmed once again that of the top remodeling projects in 2014 the kitchen remains at the top. Among the top kitchen trends, lighting and cabinetry will be our focus today.
According to Kevin Anundson, President of the NARI, “consumers want practical, comfortable kitchens that are efficient to use and easy to live in.” He goes on to say that “bigger isn’t better, although homeowners still want a feeling of space, and open concept with islands are still a significant part of kitchen trends in 2014.”
Lighting:
The impact on kitchen lighting trends can be seen in the following applications:
Fewer Upper Cabinets create more space for decorative lighting including track and task lighting with adjustable arms, providing the option to direct light where it is needed the most.
Pendant lights, a popular choice for kitchen islands provide an opportunity to bring personal style into the space.
Chandeliers in kitchens bring unexpected drama and sparkle or a soft element among hard surfaces and lines that house appliances and smooth surfaces.
Over-sized light fixture brings a focal point into an otherwise functional space.
Under-cabinet lights work double duty by enhancing function while creating mood and ambiance, especially when entertaining.
Built-In Cabinetry:
Mixing and layering finishes and woods creates a custom look alongside built-in accent cabinets. These accent cabinets often floor to ceiling with glass fronts provide a showcase opportunity for collectibles and decorative elements that complement the decorating theme.
Appliances are subtly hidden behind built-in cabinetry creating a clean, streamlined appearance.
Colorful kitchen cabinetry has made a big comeback in palettes using blues, orange, browns or greens countering neutral white, wood or dark finishes seen most in transitional or contemporary styled kitchens.
Dramatic contrasts of light cabinets with dark counter tops creates a striking visual impact.
